This memorial chapel marks the spot where St Boniface died in 754. The 2.5-metre high statue of the saint shows him holding a Bible above his head. Legend has it that this was how St Boniface tried to defend himself.

The freshwater spring here attracts many pilgrims. The water is said to have healing properties. Monastery stone was used to build a chapel near the spring and a processional park was created to allow people to walk the Stations of the Cross.

In the park there is another statue, that of the Frisian Carmelite friar Titus Brandsma, who helped initiate the establishment of a pilgrimage site here in 1934. Brandsma died at the Dachau concentration camp in 1942.

The St Boniface Chapel is situated near the first stop on the Bonifatius Kloosterpad, the St Boniface monastery route in Friesland.
