Noord-Friesland Buitendijks

Europe's Largest Salt Marsh

Land that lies on the seabed, unprotected by dikes, yet doesn't flood during normal high tide: welcome to one of Europe's largest salt marshes. It's called Noord-Friesland Buitendijks, or 'Noard-Fryslân Bûtendyks'. You might not fall for it immediately and need some time to adjust, but once you do, this will become one of your zen places. It's fascinating, and in that seeming nothingness, you'll be struck by one wonder after another. As the great Johan Cruyff once said, "You'll only see it once you get it."

Noarderleech Salt Marsh Centre

This visitor centre on the sea dike (near Hallum) is unmanned. But oh, how fun it is to have a look around and see what's on the information boards. It's also a rest stop with all the amenities you need. The centre is run by It Fryske Gea, our nature conservation organisation. It's also the starting point for various excursions through the area.

From the Salt Marsh Centre, you can easily walk outside the dikes to another fantastic birdwatching hotspot. There are also options if you have limited mobility. You can find more information at It Fryske Gea . Please translate that website with an app, but it is worth it!

More of Friesland Outside the Dikes

The Paezemmerlannen near Paesens-Moddergat, the salt marshes of Holwerd, the Dobbe walk and the Dijktempel near Marrum, and the wreck near Wierum are just a few of the sights to see outside the dikes. Simply drive along the coast and stop often to get out and experience it. Be sure to bring a kite, roll down the dike, and pack a full thermos and some snacks. What a wonderful day! That's when you'll truly feel grounded!
