From the village of Drachten, which is really more like a town, you make your way to the small village of Drachtstercompagnie which grew up around the peat industry. From 1641 onwards, poor workers dug a series of connected waterways in a regular grid pattern that is still visible today.
In 1208, Benedictine nuns established a convent in what was then a remote area. The convent in Trimunt was named Tribus Montibus, which is Latin for ‘three hills’, because three hills appeared to rise from the peatland.

At the time when the convent was established, there was a path that led from Trimunt to the church in the village of Marum. This was known as ‘the path of the white nuns’. You walk along a section of this path and then turn off towards the village of De Wilp and make your way back to Friesland.

Karmelklooster Drachten
Dit is het enige authentieke kloostergebouw dat Friesland nog kent. In 1993 vertrokken de laatste zusters en werd het gebouw in gebruik genomen als congreslocatie. Momenteel wordt het verbouwd tot een zorginstelling.
Voormalig klooster Tribus Montibus
Net over de Groningse grens stichtten de Benedictinessen in 1208 een vrouwenklooster.
