Lauwersmeer: My enduring adventure playground

I was 8 years old when we started making regular trips to National Park Lauwersmeer. More shrub than tree, is what I remember. Of course, back then I had no clue about the area's history: the closure of the Lauwerszee, a decision driven by the devastating flood in Zeeland, which caused the area to decline. A price for safety, so it was thought.

A campsite was built, and that's where I first learned to surf. Our dogs learned to swim there. Later, I'd spend hours roaming the "military" zone. Adventure; that's what the Lauwersmeer area represented, and still does.

A new world

Soon, the place seemed deserted, the water turned brackish, then fresh. And without much human intervention, a new world emerged in the Lauwersmeer. And what a world it is! Today, it's one of the most beautiful nature reserves in the Netherlands, a National Park and a Dark Sky Park.

Now, I wander through fields of orchids, have friendly chats with Konik horses and Highlanders (from a safe distance, of course!), attend the numerous bird concerts, and experience my own "starry nights." The next day, I might try my luck on a surfboard again and soak in the vibrant holiday atmosphere.

On expedition at the end of the world

Immersing yourself with binoculars, taking it all in; that's an expedition, isn't it? And that's exactly what you can do here in all sorts of ways. Go on a 4x4 safari, cycle around the lake, or venture into one of the areas surrounding it. Every time I come home, it's like returning from another world!

Heading to Lauwersmeer? Here's what to bring:

  • Binoculars: You don't have to be a birdwatcher to enjoy spotting birds. Plus, they bring everything closer, which is amazing!
  • Waterproof shoes or boots: This gives you the freedom to walk through marshy areas.
  • A nature app: If you're curious about the birds and plants you see, find a good app and install it before you go.
  • Stargazing essentials: If you plan on stargazing, bring a star chart and a cozy blanket. Perfect for when you settle down on the viewing platform or one of the benches.
  • A backpack with snacks: Pack a thermos and some tasty treats for the road! It's wonderful to enjoy a culinary moment, especially with delicious local products.
