Where can you find the best playgrounds?

When you go on holiday with your family, a visit to a playground is a must. You might think of a place with swings and see-saws. We like to take a broader view. In this list of playgrounds in Friesland, you’ll find places where the child’s imagination comes first. Where they can get dirty. And where they’ll never want to leave.

  • Frijlân in Park Vijversburg near Tytsjerk

In Tytsjerk, you'll find Park Vijversburg, a beautiful park where art and nature come together. One part of the park is Frijlân; here, children are encouraged to connect with nature. It might sound a bit mystical, but in reality, this means they embark on an exciting journey through a water labyrinth on a raft. We can't guarantee your children will stay dry as they navigate the maze!

  • The playground in De Kruidhof in Buitenpost

While you visit the botanical garden, your children will have a great time in the playground located in De Kruidhof. Water and sand are key elements in this playground, so make sure to dress your children in old clothes! A zipline, water play features in a pond, a climbing hill, and a slide – both younger and older children will have plenty of fun here!

  • Children's farm Anna Zijlstra Hoeve in Dokkum

Fun, those little goats and pigs. But most children, after feeding the rabbits, can't wait to head to the playground of this children's farm. A huge bouncy castle guarantees lots of fun, while parents can enjoy a cup of coffee on the terrace. There's also plenty to do for the littlest ones.

  • Blote Voetenpad in Opende

Just outside Friesland is the Blote Voetenpad (Barefoot Path). The Blote Voetenpad is an adventurous trail where you walk on grass, through mud, over wooden bridges, and more. Along the way, you can rest in a hammock if you like. The Blote Voetenpad is freely accessible.

  • Interactive and experience garden in Earnewâld

At the Visitor Centre of Lauwersmeer National Park, there is plenty to learn through play. There is a large insect wall, where fragrant flowers grow and attract many little creatures. You can also play in the hay, observe birds from the observation tower, and there are various climbing structures where your children can fully enjoy themselves. This playground is free to visit.

What's also really fun is

Rolling off the sea dike!! Who says a playground needs fences and play equipment? When you go to Moddergat or Wierum, your playground is limitless! Roll down the sea dike (also fun in winter when there’s snow). See who gets to the bottom first. Fun guaranteed!

Water playground at Het Booze Wijf, Lauwersoog

Just over the border with Groningen, you’ll find the restaurant Het Booze Wijf in Lauwersoog. This restaurant has a wonderful water playground. The playground is designed so that children learn how water systems work. They must cooperate to get these systems working. So, it’s educational, but also super fun! In addition, there’s a bouncy castle and plenty of other equipment. Be sure to climb the observation tower, as from there you have a view of Lauwersmeer National Park! The playground is free to visit (and in bad weather, you can also enjoy the indoor monkey cage).

In a previous blog, I already wrote about a visit to this playground: Top entertainment for families in Lauwersoog.

And what if the weather is bad?

At Esonstad in Oostmahorn and the play paradise Jonas and the Whale in Sumar, children can have a great time in the large monkey cage. There are also play equipment for smaller children. And it’s combined with a swimming pool! At Sanjesfertier in Feanwâlden, you can play both indoors and outdoors. This is ideal when you’re planning your trip well in advance and want options for both indoor and outdoor activities. There is also a (small) zoo at this play park. Aventoer in Burgum is suitable for all age groups: here you can LED bowl, play laser tag, and there is a kids' party room.
