You may have already noticed it if you're in Dokkum during the evening. At 9:50 PM, the city's bells ring out. It's a reminder of the closing of the city rampart entrances, also known as the bulwarks. At 9:50 PM in the past, the bells were rung as a warning that the gates of the Hanspoort, Halvemaanspoort, Woudpoort, and Aalsumerpoort would close ten minutes later. And we maintain that tradition!

The story of Boniface

Born in Crediton, murdered near Dokkum. Boniface made the city famous and was immediately after his death declared a saint. However tragic the missionary's life ended, the city retained a wealth of stories and a beautiful spring with a chapel as a place of pilgrimage. One of the 11fountains of Friesland - The Icefountain

In the centre of Dokkum stands one of Friesland's 11fountains. The IJsfontein (Ice Fountain) is at the mercy of the elements and is different every day. Ice draws patterns on the copper skin of the sculpture. The extent to which the fountain forms layers of ice, or doesn't, depends on the sun, humidity, temperature, wind, and precipitation.
